Extra Event 2

I selected the event titled “COYOTES IN TWO DIRECTIONS”, which will be held on Friday, July 16 at 7 pm, as my second extra event. Before entering the first event, I decided to know about the artist called “SARAH ROSALENA BRADY”. The reason for this is that when I knew about an artist and participated in the event, I thought that I could easily understand the theme of the artist's work. She is an interdisciplinary artist in the fields of new media, sculpture, and sound. The purpose of her research is to create the alternative structures that use digital techniques and calculations to figure again about the objects under colonization. She combines past and future technologies and presents new possibilities by analyzing the limitation of the system, such as the marginal language mathematics environment.   I felt embarrassed when I first came into the event. I could not figure out what Sarah wanted to convey to the audience through these works. The reason is that when I entered

Extra event 1

I decided to be my first extra event with the title "WEAK OR NO SIGNAL". This event was held at the New Wight Gallery at UCLA’ Broad Art Center opening from May 17 th until 31 st between 10am and 5pm, as the final MFA showcase of the graduating class of 2018. In UCLA, the buildings that open all classes related to the science are located in the south, while the buildings related to literature are located in the north. Therefore, as a student who majored in electrical and computer engineering, I have never been to go the building that hosts the event. The intention of placing buildings in UCLA has applied the ideas of snow that the literary and scientific culture are completely separate(SNOW). The underlying reason for Snow 's thought is that the two cultures pursue different direction, as Kelly said "The purpose of science is to pursue the truth of the universe. Likewise, the aim of the arts is to express the human condition."(KELLY) However the assig

Through the DESMA 9 class, I learned a lot about the relationship between science, technology, and art, and how it applies to one another. Moreover, I also learned how the artists applied science and technology to their works and studied what new art worlds appeared. However, I have only seen new arts indirectly through this class, but I have never actually encountered such the works of art. Therefore, I decided to write the third essay on the event with the purpose of exhibiting the works of the new art world. I found the event, named “HYPNAGOGIA” that had a plan to open from 5 to 7 at the Art | Sci Center Gallery, 5th Floor, in the events list sent by the professor Vesna (HYPNAGOGIA). As soon as I entered the event on time, there were several things that looked like white balls hanging from the ceiling. In addition, a computer was located in the middle of the room, and a video of a girl talking about something was played on one side of the room. On other sides, there were writ

Week 9 : Space & Art

이미지
Through this week’s lecture, I was interested in the fact that many people have a passionate in the universe and have made a lot of effort for space exploration since the day I was born. In 1957, the launch of the satellite for the first time in the Soviet Union resulted in the start of Space Race, which had a great impact on culture (Vesna p2). As Professor Vesna mentioned in the lecture, Space Race has brought about the change of the educational system and has had a positive impact on the possibilities of people's imagination and popular culture. Figure 1) First foot on the moon As described in Part 5 of the lecture, using plan using planetary resources, such as robotic asteroid mining industry to create a new economy or sustain human life, will play an important role in enhancing people's quality of life (Vesna p5). In addition, a trip to the moon, which was once thought of as a science fiction novel, can be realized in the near future due to increased investment in s

Week 8 : Nanotech and Art

이미지
This week's lecture and reading gave me a broad perspective on the impact of nanotechnology and taught me how a variety of applications can have a significant effect on people's way of life. Moreover, it was a significant shock to me to learn how traditional scientific principles are not applicable to the nanoscale. As Gimzewski and Vesna have mentioned in their book, understanding the technologies requires a change of perception, since the laws of physics start to change at the nano-level. Richard Feynman explained this idea in detail by showing how the movement of objects with nanoscale units can be used to create new effects. Figure 1 - Nanomedicine(Drug delivery) As a major in electrical engineering, I know a bit about nanotechnology because I learn about semiconductors. The medical device that applied the nanotechnology shown in this week’s lecture has attracted much interest to me. As Gimzewski said the idea of Nanomedicine, the development of nanotechnology has be

Event 2

At the second event, I took the lecture called The Postgenomic Condition: Justice, Knowledge, and Life After the Genome at La Kretz Garden Pavilion, room 101, on May 18th. In order to learn more about the event, I first tried to understand the term of “Postgenomic” in the title before listening to the lecture. Richardson noted that postgenomic is used in the broad sense to represent to shifts in the life sciences that are both temporal and technical. In detail, the term specifies any biological studies after the completion of the major genomic projects that employs genomic technologies and draws upon genomic knowledge as well as the contemporary genome. I looked at what was around while I waited for the event to open about 10 minutes. This is because it is a place that I have not visited in UCLA even though I am a UCLA student. The place has a purpose related to the topic of the event by serving as an important resource for a wide range of campus communities and the gener

Week 7 : NEUROSCIENCE & ART

이미지
Figure 1 - Franz_Josef_Gal Two weeks ago, we are learning about the artistic expression using medical technologies as the artists become interested in scientific knowledge. This week's lecture focuses on the fact that artists are creating new forms of art using the field of neuroscience that came to be known as people became more aware of the human body. Figure 2 - Brainbow Imagine Professor Vesna introduced the person, called Franz Joseph Gall, a renowned phrenologist who decide the individual’s potential through the degree to which the head felt bumps on. Furthermore, he argued that the size of the brain is directly related to intelligence. Even though the old-fashioned theory of phrenology is now widely regarded to be a pseudoscience, the origins of the theory have been very helpful in studying the structure of the brain. As science advances, Brainbow has been invented which helps technically to understand the brain by illuminating nerve cells using different colors to
