Week 9 : Space & Art

Through this week’s lecture, I was interested in the fact that many people have a passionate in the universe and have made a lot of effort for space exploration since the day I was born. In 1957, the launch of the satellite for the first time in the Soviet Union resulted in the start of Space Race, which had a great impact on culture (Vesna p2). As Professor Vesna mentioned in the lecture, Space Race has brought about the change of the educational system and has had a positive impact on the possibilities of people's imagination and popular culture.

As described in Part 5 of the lecture, using plan using planetary resources, such as robotic asteroid mining industry to create a new economy or sustain human life, will play an important role in enhancing people's quality of life (Vesna p5). In addition, a trip to the moon, which was once thought of as a science fiction novel, can be realized in the near future due to increased investment in space technology and global environmental problems.

Figure 2) The artwork of Ronald Davison
Exploring the universe has allowed artists to apply their knowledge of the universe to create their own works. Ronald Davison is currently working in electrical engineering, but majoring in physics and astronomy. However, as he began to realize that art and space were not far apart, he began to work as a space artist. He tried to make the design useful and practical and to catch the eye of the user. Moreover, he has the purpose of providing images that show everything that exists in the universe, from exo-planets to extraterrestrials, for those who care to follow his own works (Ronald). Another medium for the space art, a film called “The Martian”, which deals with the survival of humans on Mars, contains the artist's imagination and knowledge of the universe (ORANGE).

The space art helps the people to promote scientific and artistic exploration of the universe. Because the people have relatively little knowledge of the universe, they can have a lot of imagination about the universe, and artists use the universe to dream, predict, and explore the possibilities of space exploration. “Space Art or Astronomical Art is a genre of modern artistic expression emerging from knowledge and ideas associated with outer space, both as a source of inspiration and as a means for visualizing and promoting space travel” (IAAA). The lecture showed me a new perspective on the relationship between space and art.
