Week 4 : Medicine + Art

이미지
Even though I do not study professionally towards bioengineering, I know what principle was applied since my mother works for medicine. Therefore, before this week's lecture started, I expected that there would be some relationship between medicine and art. Moreover, I learned in detail how the medical innovation affects the art and how the art plays an important role in the medical technologies by taking the lecture. Figure 1 Professor Vesna said on YouTube that medicine appeared through the art in ancient times. The anatomy of the process of making mummies has helped to understand the human body. In addition, the anatomical chart drawn by the artists has helped the development of medicine.  Figure 2 As the technologies develop, the new medical technologies have had a good effect on the art. Casini argued that the invention of MRI improves the relationship between art and medical as well as MRI opens the way for new artistic possibilities by expressing what scientists and

Event 1

I searched for a building named Art | Sci center that opened the first event called "Collective Bread Diaries: a taste of protest". I was a student of engineers who always went to the North Campus for taking the classes, but I never imagined that there was Art | Sci center right next to Bolter building. Before entering the center, I wondered what it was built for, and I eventually found that the center is a place for building to pursue "Third Culture" (Kelly) that is created by improving the infinite potential between art and science. As I looked at the purpose of the center, I realized that the university was working hard to combine the two cultures. The event was quiet and dark with only a few lights on be. I walked in and looked around. On one side, an artist, named Haytham Nawar, wrote a short article about the purpose of the exhibition. On the other side, there were exhibited bread figures with various shapes like figure 1. There was a large printer in t

Week 3 Art + Robots

While the people had to directly move in order to do something in the past, recently, the robots and A.I, which attract the attention of many people, give the people comfort by replacing what they need to do. The robots have not been developed to the ultimate goals of the scientists mentioned by Hod Lipson, such as Robots will continue to evolve like animals, learn something like children, grow, adapt, and self-repair. The robots eventually begin to have an influence on not only physical aspects of people but also the mental aspects such as art. For example, there is a robot named "NIghtwriter Nyx" that expresses art by sprinkling a special material that can be seen at night on the floor, which not only attracts people's interest in performing arts activities by expressing art but also shows the possibility of new art using the robots. Figure 1 While there is such a positive response, some people look at the negative aspects of robot development. A person named Ben

Week 2 : Math + Art

이미지
I like mathematics as a student with a major in Electrical and computer engineering. Mathematics not only plays an important role in improving the quality of our lives, but it can have only one answer, unlike literature that can have various answers. Through the lecture 2, I could realize that mathematics has a great impact on art. For example, the artists such as Brunelleschi saw the mathematical beauty in nature. In addition, when the people draw a picture or take a picture, they need the vanishing point, which requires some mathematical calculations (marc Frantz). Figure 1) In 1956, an artist, called M.C Escher, expressed his work using mathematics, and many mathematicians admired him for an extraordinary visualization of mathematical principles in his work. Moreover, as technology developed, there are a lot of artists who create their works with various expressions using science. As an artist, named John Maeda, said, "The computer is a multi-dimensional canvas, mani

Week 1 : Two Cultures

The main idea of the lecture 1, which deals with the importance of making the interactions between the arts/humanities and the sciences has played a role in bringing me a change of mind. Before I took this class, as a student majoring in Electrical and Computer engineering, I thought that the technical knowledge and creativity, not using art or literature, was only needed to create or invent something. In addition, I thought that separating the arts and the sciences would not have a bad influence on developing both cultures. I have no doubt that many engineers have this perception as I did. C.P Snow, who wrote a book called "The Two Cultures and the Scientific Revolution", wanted to tell others that the literary and scientific culture are completely separate. Many people find it easy to understand, for the typical example, by looking at the location of the building in the UCLA. The university is currently divided into two cultures, with South Campus being located in
