Extra event 1

I decided to be my first extra event with the title "WEAK OR NO SIGNAL". This event was held at the New Wight Gallery at UCLA’ Broad Art Center opening from May 17th until 31st between 10am and 5pm, as the final MFA showcase of the graduating class of 2018.

In UCLA, the buildings that open all classes related to the science are located in the south, while the buildings related to literature are located in the north. Therefore,as a student who majored in electrical and computer engineering, I have never been to go the building that hosts the event. The intention of placing buildings in UCLA has applied the ideas of snow that the literary and scientific culture are completely separate(SNOW). The underlying reason for Snow 's thought is that the two cultures pursue different direction, as Kelly said "The purpose of science is to pursue the truth of the universe. Likewise, the aim of the arts is to express the human condition."(KELLY) However the assignment that Vesna professor gave us, the participation in the event, allows us the opportunity to meet a variety of people and get to know the literary culture. While I was going to a building where events are held, unlike the South Campus, I felt that the North Campus was beautifully decorated. The woods were lush and the artwork was located in the middle of the way, making the campus atmosphere more beautiful. What I felt when I came into the event was that I had misplaced my destination. The reason is that TVs are hanging on the wall in front of the entrance, so I thought that the TVs were located for the purpose of playing video, not the work of art. However, when I saw the descriptions of the works on the event guide papers, and then saw them, I felt that the artists made a lot of efforts to create new art that combined science and technology.

The works displayed in the event do not have a common theme. I was interested in a series called “biogram blueprints”. When I first saw the works, I felt that the artist had just sprayed the white paint on a dark blue paper without regularity. However, when I read the explanation of this work, the purpose or expression technique of the work is totally different from my idea. This work represents the other two ends of the invisible light spectrum through the cyanotype, one of the oldest methods of photo printing that requires a simple and inexpensive process to make a copy of a drawing called the blueprint from the 20th century. (Wikipedia) The ultimate goal of the work was to find out and express the relationship between reality and unreal, visible and invisible. The reason why artistic expressions that could not have been done in the past are now possible is the development of science and technology. For example, If Brainbow that helps technically to understand the brain by illuminating nerve cells has been invented(Litchamn), "Neuro Art", defined in Frazzetto and Anker's book, would not have come out. (Frazzetto and Anker) Therefore, I once again realize that the relationship between art, technology, and science must continue for the development of each other.
