Extra Event 2
I selected the event titled “COYOTES IN TWO
DIRECTIONS”, which will be held on Friday, July 16 at 7 pm, as my second extra
event. Before entering the first event, I decided to know about the artist
called “SARAH ROSALENA BRADY”. The reason for this is that when I knew about an
artist and participated in the event, I thought that I could easily understand
the theme of the artist's work. She is an interdisciplinary artist in the
fields of new media, sculpture, and sound. The purpose of her research is to
create the alternative structures that use digital techniques and calculations
to figure again about the objects under colonization. She combines past and
future technologies and presents new possibilities by analyzing the limitation
of the system, such as the marginal language mathematics environment.
I felt embarrassed when I first came into
the event. I could not figure out what Sarah wanted to convey to the audience
through these works. The reason is that when I entered the event, there were
long sticks on both sides of the room that seemed to be needed in the construction
site; On the left wall was a pair of sticks with something like a dog foot on
both ends; On the right wall was a stick with a screwdriver on one end and a
conical shape on the other. In addition, there was a device with six sticks
with hooks on the end moving sideways.
The artist explains, “Coyotes in Two
Directions examines the signifier of the trickster and shapeshifter as a
symbolic metaphor to create techno-hybrid forms.” (Sarah) From the old days,
the energy of the coyote represents both good and bad fortune. The symbolism of
coyote that Native Americans regard as a trickster and teacher, remains
mysterious yet. (HAT IS MY SPIRIT ANIMAL) Moreover, the coyote is regarded as
the most successful animal surviving in Anthropocene. (MATTHEW) She said that
she made these works through sculpture, automata, and 3D scans. However, I come
up with the bad aspects of automation from the lecture of “art and robots” that
I learned in the third week.
Benjamin noted that the mechanical
reproduction of art created by automation will be the main reason for the
elimination of the inherent characteristics, such as originality and creativity
of the work. (Benjamin) however, as Rodney Brooks, the relationship between
society and mechanization is inseparable and will, over time, ultimately play
the most important role in raising the quality of our lives. (Brooks) For
example, the robots will evolve like animals, learn something like a human,
grow, adapt, and self-repair, which brings have a great impact on people's
physical and mental aspects. (Lipson) I want to see a better world than before
by looking for a way to integrate art and mechanization.
