Week 8 : Nanotech and Art

This week's lecture and reading gave me a broad perspective on the impact of nanotechnology and taught me how a variety of applications can have a significant effect on people's way of life. Moreover, it was a significant shock to me to learn how traditional scientific principles are not applicable to the nanoscale. As Gimzewski and Vesna have mentioned in their book, understanding the technologies requires a change of perception, since the laws of physics start to change at the nano-level. Richard Feynman explained this idea in detail by showing how the movement of objects with nanoscale units can be used to create new effects. Figure 1 - Nanomedicine(Drug delivery) As a major in electrical engineering, I know a bit about nanotechnology because I learn about semiconductors. I searched for a building named Art | Sci center that opened the first event called "Collective Bread Diaries: a taste of protest". I was a student of engineers who always went to the North Campus for taking the classes, but I never imagined that there was Art | Sci center right next to Bolter building. Before entering the center, I wondered what it was built for, and I eventually found that the center is a place for building to pursue "Third Culture" (Kelly) that is created by improving the infinite potential between art and science. As I looked at the purpose of the center, I realized that the university was working hard to combine the two cultures. The event was quiet and dark with only a few lights on be. I walked in and looked around. On one side, an artist, named Haytham Nawar, wrote a short article about the purpose of the exhibition. Week 1 : Two Cultures

The main idea of the lecture 1, which deals with the importance of making the interactions between the arts/humanities and the sciences has played a role in bringing me a change of mind. Before I took this class, as a student majoring in Electrical and Computer engineering, I thought that the technical knowledge and creativity, not using art or literature, was only needed to create or invent something. In addition, I thought that separating the arts and the sciences would not have a bad influence on developing both cultures. I have no doubt that many engineers have this perception as I did. C.P Snow, who wrote a book called "The Two Cultures and the Scientific Revolution", wanted to tell others that the literary and scientific culture are completely separate.
