This week's lecture and reading gave me a broad perspective on the impact of nanotechnology and taught me how a variety of applications can have a significant effect on people's way of life. Moreover, it was a significant shock to me to learn how traditional scientific principles are not applicable to the nanoscale. As Gimzewski and Vesna have mentioned in their book, understanding the technologies requires a change of perception, since the laws of physics start to change at the nano-level. Richard Feynman explained this idea in detail by showing how the movement of objects with nanoscale units can be used to create new effects. At the second event, I took the lecture called The Postgenomic Condition: Justice, Knowledge, and Life After the Genome at La Kretz Garden Pavilion, room 101, on May 18th. In order to learn more about the event, I first tried to understand the term of “Postgenomic” in the title before listening to the lecture. Richardson noted that postgenomic is used in the broad sense to represent to shifts in the life sciences that are both temporal and technical. In detail, the term specifies any biological studies after the completion of the major genomic projects that employs genomic technologies and draws upon genomic knowledge as well as the contemporary genome. As the scientists developed their knowledge of the biotechnologies, the artists used their knowledge to show the people the new art world. Moreover, this new art inspired scientists to create more and more new biotechnologies as Levy mentions the effect of art, “Art in its broadest sense has been one way to acclimatize the public to new scientific discoveries and new technologies.” For example, Joe Davis's project, called Audio Microscope, allows the people to hear individual cells using cell structure and sound to show how the art can encompass the cellular level mechanisms. His project has played a very important role not only in creating new forms of art that integrate biology, but also in completely changing the focus of the scientists. Even though I do not study professionally towards bioengineering, I know what principle was applied since my mother works for medicine. Therefore, before this week's lecture started, I expected that there would be some relationship between medicine and art. Moreover, I learned in detail how the medical innovation affects the art and how the art plays an important role in the medical technologies by taking the lecture. I searched for a building named Art | Sci center that opened the first event called "Collective Bread Diaries: a taste of protest". I was a student of engineers who always went to the North Campus for taking the classes, but I never imagined that there was Art | Sci center right next to Bolter building. Before entering the center, I wondered what it was built for, and I eventually found that the center is a place for building to pursue "Third Culture" (Kelly) that is created by improving the infinite potential between art and science. As I looked at the purpose of the center, I realized that the university was working hard to combine the two cultures. The event was quiet and dark with only a few lights on be. While the people had to directly move in order to do something in the past, recently, the robots and A.I, which attract the attention of many people, give the people comfort by replacing what they need to do. The robots have not been developed to the ultimate goals of the scientists mentioned by Hod Lipson, such as Robots will continue to evolve like animals, learn something like children, grow, adapt, and self-repair. The robots eventually begin to have an influence on not only physical aspects of people but also the mental aspects such as art. For example, there is a robot named "NIghtwriter Nyx" that expresses art by sprinkling a special material that can be seen at night on the floor, which not only attracts people's interest in performing arts activities by expressing art but also shows the possibility of new art using the robots.
